Assistant Editor Job Announcement
Seeking Assistant Editor
- See also one-year-Community Editor position open fall 2025; KDT is open to idea of combining positions or some responsibilities for the first year.
As of September 2025, KneeDeep has a position open for a part-time contributing/assistant editor, who will be a linchpin in our team. This editor will directly assist the managing editor with all types of editorial tasks and also help oversee our community & social media editor in her administrative duties.
All applicants MUST be local to the San Francisco Bay Area and willing to travel around the region on the job.
Tasks

Attend events and meetings of various groups engaged in climate resilience work in the region (in person and remote).

Share management of pitches, reporters, story development, editing, graphics sourcing, proofreading, copyediting, and wordpress layout with managing editor.

Write one short 400-600 word story per month on a local event, action or policy change.

Manage Constant Contact newsletter outreach and maintain mailing list.

Oversee expansion of KneeDeep’s social media reach. In particular, focus on Linked In as a KneeDeep influencer.

Implement audience expansion projects in our existing marketing plan.

Track and update our analytic and search engine tools, as needed.

Grantwriting support.
Commitment
-
Estimated Hours Per Month: 25-30

$18,000 ~$25,000 annual depending on skills

Freelance professional contract, no benefits
-
Additional income can be earned writing occasional full length feature stories on a freelance basis.
Qualifications
-
Journalism degree preferred
-
Editorial experience (2+ years)
-
Knowledge of environmental equity and climate resilience issues a plus.

Demonstrated tracking & organizing skills

Local to SF Bay Area
